Position Description

W. H.  Thompson Scholars mentors provide peer leadership within the W. H.  Thompson Scholars Learning Community.  Mentors provide key support to first-year scholars as they navigate the transition from high school to college and contribute to the successful functioning of the W. H.  Thompson community by staffing events and the Thompson Scholars Study Café.  Mentors act as role models to other students and serve as conduits between students and professional staff.

Duties

  • Provide peer leadership within the W. H.  Thompson Scholars community via direct mentorship of first-year students.  This duty includes conducting monthly individual meetings with students and assisting with monthly community dinner events. Outside of these monthly requirements, mentors must be available on an as needed basis to assist students seeking their advice and assistance. 
  • Assist professional staff with EDPS 97 instruction during the fall semester.
  • Staff W. H.  Thompson meetings, social events, and work shifts at the Thompson Scholars Study Café. 

 

Expectations

  • Responsibly execute monthly individual meetings with mentees in addition to staffing Thompson events.
  • To be available to students on an as needed basis outside of monthly meetings and events.
  • Serve as a role model in the learning community.
  • Contribute to the operation of the Study Café by working shifts as availability allows.
  • Assist in instructing EDPS 97 in the fall semester.
  • Meet monthly with W. H.  Thompson professional staff and keep open lines of communication with staff at all times, as well as keep excellent records and submit them in a timely manner.
  • Receive support through monthly communication with an Undergraduate Assistant.
  • Attend all required events (see below) and other learning community special events, and abide by university policies and confidentiality rules.

Mentors must commit their attendance at the following:

Training Retreats

  • Fall retreat August 17 – August 20 (4 full days at Camp Carol Joy Holling)
  • William H. Thompson faculty retreat lunch – August 21
  • Spring retreat January 2021 (Dates TBA)  


Monthly Trainings
All Monthly Trainings are on Friday afternoons from 3:00 – 5:00 pm.

First-Year Scholar Community Events

  • Community Dinners are once a month on Wednesdays from 5:00 – 8:00 pm.
  • Saturday, August 22 First-Year Orientation (All Day)
  • All other community dinner dates will be announced  


Qualifications

  • Second+ year as a W. H.  Thompson scholar
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 to apply
  • Full time enrollment at UNL
