Hiring Foreign FacultyUniversity units that have offered or may offer faculty positions to individuals who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States must contact Peter Levitov, associate dean of international affairs, and the university's immigration attorney. It is critical that UNL follow the pertinent immigration regulations. When possible, international affairs will help the department or school obtain the appropriate visa classification for a new faculty member. The East Campus Activities Building and the basketball courts and swimming pool in Mabel Lee Hall will be open for recreation this week. The East Campus Activities Building will be closed for annual maintenance May 19-26. Annual steam outage set for MayThe annual steam outage will occur on City Campus only May 11-17 if weekly high temperatures average 60 degrees or above. During this week, the centralized steam distribution system will be shut down. This outage allows for required maintenance of equipment, including replacing and upgrading key components of the university's utility system. During this outage, heating or process steam will not be available in those building systems served by campus steam. Next Year End Deadline for Fiscal Year 2002/2003May 26 is the last day for requisitions to be received in purchasing for items requiring a sealed bid (purchases over $40,000). Seminars to focus on public-policy issuesThe University of Nebraska Public Policy Center, with the UNL College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Journalism and Mass Communications and the University of Nebraska Rural Initiative will sponsor the 2002-2003 Thomas C. Sorensen Policy Seminar Series. It will examine some of Nebraska's most important policy issues and is an opportunity for public or non-profit-sector professionals, lobbyists, citizen advocates, elected officials or members of interest groups to become more polished and effective policymakers, policy process participants or policy consumers. Retirement Reception for Ken Holm is June 18Ken Holm, director of printing and copy services, will be honored at a reception from 2-4 p.m. June 18 at Printing and Copy Services' new location, 1700 Y St. Retirement Incentive ProgramOn April 26, the Board of Regents approved an amendment to the Retirement Incentive Program for Tenured Faculty. The amendment extends the time for eligible faculty members to elect to participate in the program to June 30. Summer hours schedule at UNL: During the summer, UNL offices will maintain normal office hours, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Because flexible work schedules have been widely accepted by staff members in the past during the summers, departments are encouraged to permit staffing flex time where possible while still being sure that offices are open and staffed sufficiently from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Media, technology courses offered over summerInformation Services will offer introductory classes in multimedia software this summer. Workshops generally run for two hours and cost $20. One-hour sessions are $10, and Blackboard introductory courses are free. Payment is due upon registration and may be made using a cost object or by check.
