E-News is a weekly compilation of notices distributed to all faculty and staff and replaces the "e-mail to all" system. The deadline for submission is 5 p.m. Monday; E-News is distributed Tuesday evenings. Submitted items must be sponsored by a UNL department, program or organization. No commercial or personal announcements are allowed. Announcements must have news, not opinion or fund-raising, content. Submit items to: <www.unl.edu/e-news>.
Two mini-workshops on Foundation Center services for grant seekers will be presented by Jeanetta Drueke, coordinator of the Love Library FC Cooperating Collection, on Dec. 19. The first workshop from 10-10:30 a.m. will focus on general information on grants and foundations and information available on the FC website. The second workshop from 10:45-11:15 a.m. will focus on FC Search, a database designed to help nonprofit organizations identify appropriate foundations for their grant proposals.
The workshops will be in the ESC room on the first floor of Love Library.

The next UNOPA meeting will be at 11:45 a.m. Dec. 9 at the Champions Club. Entertainment featuring classical and holiday music will be provided by Adrienne Dickson, mezzo soprano, and Jack Rinke, piano.

UNOPA members are reminded to bring their unwrapped gifts and the original stars/ornaments from the Giving Tree program to the meeting. Members are buying gifts to help children from Cedars Home and low-income seniors from the Victorian Home.
Others interested in supporting this cause can pick up ornaments from the trees in the Nebraska and East Unions or call Amy Stewart at 472-8172 or Tricia Liedle, 472-9537.
In addition to the items requested on the stars/ornaments, the organizations have requested some larger items. Anyone interested in buying larger items should call one of the UNOPA officers for more information.
On Dec. 31, the UNL Libraries will stop subscribing to AMICO Library, the digital library of visual and documentary resources of the Art Museum Image Consortium. UNL is contractually obligated to destroy "all AMICO works mounted on or distributed by university computer systems or on fixed media."
Anyone with works obtained from AMICO Library must destroy them by Jan. 1.
Examination Services is available to score final exams, which will be given Dec. 15-19. First-time users should call Exam Services at 472-2611 for scheduling information. For questions about finals, call or e-mail <examservices@unlnotes.unl.edu >.
All exams must be picked up by 4 p.m. Dec. 22. Regular office hours will resume Jan. 5.
A Fidelity consultant will be in the Nebraska Union on Dec. 8 and the Nebraska East Union on Dec. 9 to provide free, one-on-one counseling sessions on investment-planning issues. The room will be posted.

UNL's Business and Finance division has completed a comprehensive web page offering quick links to a variety of university policies and procedures. The page is linked from the UNL home page, <www.unl.edu>, under "UNL Quick Links," select "policies."
The site allows easy access to hundreds of policies including: NU systemwide, UNL, academic, auxiliaries, facilities, fiscal affairs, human resources, information technology, police and safety, students and athletics.
The site, which has been under construction for three or four months, also adds policy information that has not previously been available online, said Christine Jackson, vice chancellor for business and finance.
Omicron Delta Kappa will offer a roundtable discussion, The Future of the NU Presidency, at 7 p.m. Dec. 4 in the Great Hall in Kauffman Residence Center. The event is open to the public.
This roundtable will discuss the role of the NU president and how this will be shaped by the selection of a new president. Speakers will include Richard Hoover, a senior lecturer in Educational Administration; NU Regent Charles Wilson; and Philip Schoo, superintendent of Lincoln Public Schools. Charlyne Berens, associate professor of News-Editorial, will moderate the discussion.
The purpose of the roundtable discussions is to educate UNL faculty and students about campus issues and to promote political awareness and involvement. The audience will have the chance to ask questions of the speakers.

Learn to use Blackboard to the fullest at a workshop by Information Services. Instruction will cover how to use Excel to create grade rosters and how to use Word's tracking feature to add comments and track changes in student documents.
The workshop is $20 and will be from 3-5 p.m. Dec. 12 in 107 Architecture Hall.

Faculty and staff should remind themselves of the university's inclement weather policy, which can be found at <http://busfin.un l.edu/bfsite/inclementweather.cfm>.
The chancellor decides whether to close the university because of severe weather on the recommendation of the vice chancellor for business and finance. Radio and television stations should be notified of closing information by 6 a.m. for day classes and by 2 p.m. for night classes.
Selected positions have been identified as essential during weather closings, such as police officers, snow-removal personnel and others. These employees are made aware of this designation when they are hired. Employees should assume they are not essential personnel during a weather emergency unless they have been told otherwise.
If the university closes during the day so students and employees can get home safely, the campus will be notified through deans, directors and department chairs.
Degree Grade Rosters identifying Dec. 20 degree candidates have been mailed to faculty. The deadline for returning the rosters to the Graduation Services Office in 109 Canfield Administration Building is Dec. 5.
Layman Awards provide seed money for projects that will enhance faculty members' ability to obtain external funding or produce scholarly work. Layman Trust Funds of $289,682 will be available for awards for summer 2004 and the 2004-2005 academic year. The maximum award per faculty member is $10,000.

The 12th annual Student Design Project Exhibition will be from 3-5 p.m. Dec. 10 in the Great Plains Room of the Nebraska East Union.
Hosted by the UNL Department of Biological Systems Engineering, this fall-semester event showcases design projects by students in Agricultural, Biological Systems, and Industrial Engineering.

UNL is seeking nominations for the 2004 Chancellor's "Fulfilling the Dream" Award.
The award was established in 1997 to honor individuals who have contributed to the UNL community or the wider Lincoln community by their exemplary action in promoting the goals and vision of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The award or awards are presented each January during ceremonies at the university's celebration of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. The 2004 presentation will be Jan. 19.
Nomination materials, including a letter of nomination and no more than three letters of support, should be sent by Dec. 12 to Tom Simons, Chair, MLK Awards Subcommittee, 321 Canfield Administration Building, UNL, Lincoln, NE 68588-0424. The awards subcommittee will review the nominations and make recommendations for the final selections to the MLK Day Planning Committee and UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman.
The Office of Research and Graduate Studies will host an NSF CAREER/NIH K01 Awards workshop from 10:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Jan. 26 in the Nebraska Union. The workshop will familiarize pretenure faculty with these prestigious career development awards and offer insights into the application process.
The National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program and the National Institutes of Health K01 Awards provide up to five years of funding to enable faculty to develop careers as outstanding teacher-scholars and to achieve independent research funding.
The workshop will feature proposal-writing advice from recent UNL recipients and will be presented in two sessions. The morning session will focus on NSF CAREER Awards; the afternoon session will be devoted to the NIH K01 Award program. All workshop participants are invited to attend a free noon lunch.

Employees wishing to donate vacation days to the UNL crisis leave pool may do so by 5 p.m. Dec. 12. The crisis leave pool is for UNL employees who are facing serious health problems or other personal crisis and have taken all of their own available sick, vacation and compensatory leave.
Employees who have completed their original probation and who earn vacation leave may donate up to five accrued vacation days per calendar year to the crisis pool.
To donate, print out a Crisis Leave Donation Form from the web, <http://hr.unl.edu/er/crisis.cfm>. Return or fax the completed form to the payroll department by the deadline. City Campus forms should be sent through campus mail to 406 Administration (0436) or by fax to 472-0134. IANR employees may submit forms to 313 Agricultural Hall (0705) or fax to 472-9847.
