An uncommon sight (and smell) on campus

An Animal Control officer watches a skunk that wandered onto City Campus on Nov. 21. The critter wandered around the bushes north of the Nebraska Union before crawling around the rocks of the fountain. The officer tranquilized the skunk and carted it away. Photo by David Fitzgibbon.

Research offices to offer open house Dec. 8

The campus community is invited to an open house at the Alexander Building West, 312 N. 14th St., sponsored by the Office of Research and Graduate Studies and Prem Paul, vice chancellor for research.

The open house, 3-4:30 p.m. Dec. 8, will showcase the four Office of Research divisions now located in the building. They are the Office of Technology Development, the Office of Sponsored Programs, Research Compliance Services and the Office of Proposal Development.

Personnel in these four offices had previously been scattered in buildings across and even off campus, Paul said. Some were working in the Beadle Center, Whittier, Tech Park, Varner Hall and Canfield Administration Building.

"Consolidating our personnel into a one-stop shop helps us provide better services to our clients," Paul said. "This is a convenience for our researchers and also helps tie us our economic developments more closely with the city of Lincoln."

Paul said he was pleased to be sharing the building with the Office of Admissions.

"Two very public arms of the university are now serving as one of the front doors to the university," he said.

About 40 Office of Research employees work in the newly renovated space that once housed the University of Nebraska Press offices, which are now in the Haymarket. The building is the former home of Union Insurance Co.

The open house offers a chance to learn about the services provided by the various units in the Office of Research and Graduate Studies and also can help attach a person to the name at the top of an e-mail or the voice on the telephone.

Refreshments will be served. The event is a "stop in when you can" open house with no formal program or remarks scheduled.

By Sandi Alswager, IANR News Service

Agronomy and Horticulture Highlights will feature the latest in research, teaching and extension activities from the UNL Department of Agronomy and Horticulture.

The annual event from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 11 at the Cornhusker Hotel highlights the department's programs and offers an opportunity to get to know those in the department who are leading these efforts, said Kenneth Cassman, department head.

The program draws diverse participants including crop consultants, industry professionals, farmers, Cooperative Extension educators and alumni and friends of the department, he said.

It's time to take note of bad-weather policy

Faculty and staff should remind themselves of the university's inclement weather policy, which can be found at <http://busfin.un l.edu/bfsite/inclementweather.cfm>.

The chancellor decides whether to close the university because of severe weather on the recommendation of the vice chancellor for business and finance. Radio and television stations should be notified of closing information by 6 a.m. for day classes and by 2 p.m. for night classes.

Selected positions have been identified as essential during weather closings, such as police officers, snow-removal personnel and others. These employees are made aware of this designation when they are hired. Employees should assume they are not essential personnel during a weather emergency unless they have been told otherwise.

If the university closes during the day so students and employees can get home safely, the campus will be notified through deans, directors and department chairs.
