Communication Studies Mission Statement

The role and mission of the faculty and students of the Department of Communication Studies is to examine human symbolic activity as it shapes and is shaped by relationships, institutions, and societies. This work concerns the creation, analysis, and critique of messages. The department's research, teaching, and service devote particular attention to understanding the ways in which communication erodes and sustains collaboration within and among local, national, and global communities.

International Studies major talking about a Communication Studies course

"This past fall I participated in a global classroom in which half of the class consisted of students at the Yeditepe University in Istanbul, Turkey. We talked about global issues and international communication through a video-conferencing system. The class helped us to see views of world affairs from eyes halfway around the world." (Comm 211 taught by Dr. Charles Braithwaite, Senior Instructor, Communication Studies Department, Fall 2008-09)
