Photo Club

The Photo Club is dedicated to the advancement of photojournalism at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The club encourages photojournalists to reflect high standards of quality in their professional and amateur performance and in their personal code of ethics. The Photo Club provides continuing education programs, social environment and fraternalism without bias, as we support and acknowledge the best the profession and the students of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has to offer.

We meet every other week at the College of Journalism and Mass Communications - Andersen Hall - usually in the basement in room 15.

Regular activities and opportunities include:

  • Themes each meeting for you to go out and have fun and practice shooting and then show off to the club who will comment and critique as you like.
** You do not need to have your own camera. Cameras can be checked out from the journalism college or Henzlik Hall media center or shared amongst members who do have cameras.
  • Speakers - professional and newspaper photographers (past speakers have included Heidi Hoffman (LJS), Matt Miller (OWH), Joel Sartore (National Geographic, J-school grad and lives in Lincoln), Bill Frakes (Sports Illustrated), Luis Peon-Casanova (CoJMC professor)
  • Photography tutorials to learn how to use camera equipment and techniques including shutter speed, aperture, lighting, etc.
  • Photo Club exhibitions - at least 1 each semester - members get their photos printed and displayed at a local venue (past exhibitions have been at the Rotunda Gallery in the union, Zen's bar downtown, Creamery Building in the Haymarket and Starbucks downtown)
  • Opportunities to enter photos in contests and observe judging at competitions including the CPOY (College Photographer of the Year) and others
  • Field trips to First Friday Art Gallery Walk each month and other events (we have gone to Roca Berry Farm, a pumpkin patch and Pioneers Park before)

Overall Photo Club is pretty laid back. You don't have to have any experience to join, just come have fun and learn.
