Welcome to the Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience
Central Facility for Scanning Probe Microscopy
The NCMN operates and coordinates eight Central Facilities that are open to all UNL researchers as well as external (private sector) researchers. The Central Facility for Scanning Probe Microscopy is one of these facilities. To learn more about our facility, please go to our About Facility web page.
News and Announcements:
- July 21, 2011 NCMN SPM facility has moved to Jorgensen Hall, room 013. You are welcome to the new SPM Lab for materials imaging and characterization.
- July 5, 2011 NCMN SPM facility will be moved from 165 Behlen Lab to Jorgensen Hall in the week of July 18th. SPM lab will be shut down during the relocation.
- July 30, 2010 Problem on D3100-SPM scanner has been fixed. SPM is cyrrently in the normal working status and available for users.
- June 15, 2010 NCMN SPM central facility has moved to 165 Behlen Lab.
- NOTICE!! The NCMN WEB CALENDAR SERVER is shut down for maintenance. Please contact the respective specialist for scheduling
experiments.
- May 15, 2010 NCMN SPM facility will be moved from 16 Ferguson to 165 Behlen Lab during the second week of June. SPM lab will be shut down during move. Estimate several days for disconnecting, moving, installation, testing, and calibration of E-Scope and 3100 SPM.
- December 12, 2008 Reminder: The new Digital Instruments EnviroScope Atomic Force Microscope (ESCOPE) combines AFM imaging with environmental controls and hermetically sealed sample chamber to perform contact, lateral force, and TappingMode atomic force microscopy in air, vacuum, or a purged gas, as well as a heating environment. With advanced environmental capabilities, users can observe sample reactions to a variety of complex environmental conditions while scanning.

- Nov 20, 2006 SPM Lab has moved to Ferguson Hall, room 16. You are welcome to the new Lab for materials imaging and characterization.
- Nov 16, 2006 SPM central facility shut down for moving.
- Nov 6, 2006 SPM facility will be moved to the Nanofab Facility (Ferguson Hall, room 16). We will arrange to shut down the SPM central facility several days for moving, setup and installation, testing, and calibration.
- Nov 22, 2005 A Power Lever electronic door lock has been installed on SPM facility lab. For all authorized SPM users, the Power Lever Door Lock is accessed via a combination entered at the keypad. The combination length is six digits (two-digit user ID + four-digit PIN). The combination will always be unique to a given user who will receive a valid combination via email.
- Nov 9, 2005 SPM is out of order temporarily. SPM head scanner will be repaired.
- Oct 21, 2004 Problem on SPM has been fixed. SPM is available for users now. All SPM users should be very careful in using SPM facility. Please see instructions for how to use SPM correctly. Please read the notice on the wall of the SPM Lab to know how to protect the SPM scanner. Thanks for your attention.
- Oct 18, 2004 SPM is shutdown. The power supply and X-Y board on the Nanoscope controller IIIa have been replaced. The Z-board for the controller will be changed.
- Sep 16, 2004 The trouble-shooting of the zoom motor on the SPM has been finished. This should be resolve the problem of zooming in and out of video images that we have been experiencing lately.
- Mar 31, 2004 SPM facility website with a direct link to an instrument sign-up calendar is online (http://www.unl.edu/ncmn/spm/calendar.shtml). Trained and registered users have been given accounts to make a reservation for using SPM. Please remember to sign-up for the SPM schedule before you use it!
SPM facility is available for use by all qualified faculty, students and researchers at UNL, as well as by researchers from other universities and industries. Scheduling is handled on first-come first-serve basis by sign-up the instrument reservation calendar online. A facility specialist is available to assist researchers using the instrument.
