We are excited to announce 2020-21 winners of Women's and Gender Studies Scholarships and Awards.
Outstanding Student Achievement Award
Jordan Malzer earned the Outstanding Student Achievement Award. Jordan has made many achievements related to Women’s & Gender Studies, from courses taken to research to community activism. For example, Jordan completed a UCARE project under the mentorship of Dr. Kelsy Burke that examined feminist perspectives on pornography and compared anti-pornography feminists' involvement in the 1980s sex-wars to current conversations. Jordan also had an internship at Friendship Home, a local shelter for victims of intimate partner violence. She plans to pursue a career in law.
Karen Dunning Undergraduate Award
Jo Schroer earned the Undergraduate Karen Dunning Award for their Planned Parenthood Instagram Infographic project. This project contains a series of infographics posted on Instragram that address and dispel common myths about Planned Parenthood and offers useful information about this essential healthcare organization.
Karen Dunning Graduate Award
Zainab Saleh earned the Graduate Karen Dunning Award for their Paper "Resisting the Eurocentric Through Okot p’Bitek’s Song of Lawino: Hair Discourse Surrounding the Black Female Body." In this paper, Zainab offers a compelling analysis of hair discourse surrounding the Black female body transatlantically, from Africa (specifically the countries of Uganda and Kenya) to America in both postcolonial and contemporary standards.
Melba Cope Scholarship
Lizzy Lavin earned both the Melba Cope and Dr. Christine Black Scholarships. Lizzy has numerous accomplishments within Women’s & Gender Studies and has made significant contributions to WGS and the UNL campus. A notable contribution is Lizzy’s work in the Women’s Center and the development a podcast that covers local issues surrounding WGS and helps to spread awareness of issues facing women in our community.
Dr. Christine Black Undergraduate Scholarship (1 of 2)
Clare Frances Kennedy earned the Dr. Christine Black Scholarship. Clare has made numerous contributions to WGS. For instance, Clare is a representative on the Chancellor’s Commission on the Status of Women. Additionally, Clare worked on an advocacy project promoting the University Health Center’s gynecologic care on campus.
