Career fairs offer a great opportunity to meet potential employers or even just get experience interviewing. But preparing for them doesn’t have to be difficult. We have you covered! Check out these tips from UNL Career Services to make sure you’re ready for the career fair and score that dream job or internship.
Clean up your resume
Resumes allow potential employers to quickly get to know you. Be sure your resume best highlights your experience and skills and is easy to read. Career Services has lots of options to help you tailor your resume:
- Check out their website for resume tips, from formatting to selecting the right style of resume for you.
- Set up a resume review, a face-to-face or phone meeting about your resume. Walk-ins are welcome, but students can also set up an appointment via MyPlan.
Dress to impress
Selecting and wearing appropriate and professional attire will make a great first impression. Plan to wear business formal and avoid jeans or casual sundresses, clothing with holes or rips, or athletic clothing or sneakers. In need of some new threads? Check out the Career Closet in Hawks Hall. There, Huskers students can pick up FREE clean, gently used professional dress items to put their best foot forward.
Get to know the employers
Research who will be at the career fair, including information on their current opportunities and the organization as a whole. A career fair is a good time to get to know employers but you should know a little about your top prospects beforehand so you can ask deeper questions and tailor conversations to each employer.

A Career Coach will help you prepare a personal introduction, identify employers of interest, and develop networking strategies. Learn more and make an appointment here.
Update your online profile
Catch an employer’s eye even before you talk with them at the career fair by updating your Handshake Profile and marking it Visible to Employers. When your Handshake profile is at 100%, you are 5 times more likely to be contacted by employers! This is also a great platform to find jobs and internships with over 10,000 opportunities are posted to Handshake each month.
