Lincoln’s Historic Haymarket is one of the key attractions of the city. Located a short distance from campus, you can find almost anything to do in this downtown neighborhood. Whether you’re looking for something to eat, a new outfit to wear on gameday or just want to leave campus for a bit to do something new, the Haymarket will almost certainly have something for you!
To Eat:
Grab a midday pick-me-up
The Mill and Crescent Moon Coffee are two favorites for coffee, food and atmosphere lovers alike. Sit among pieces of vintage décor at either shop or opt out of the indoors to enjoy the shaded patio along The Mill. Between these neighboring shops you’ll find a range of beverages and menu items like soups and sandwiches, both sweet and savory crepes, pastries and more — there’s a slim chance that you won’t find something you enjoy! If you’re looking for a fun and locally sourced gift to give, check out the merchandise collection from either shop.

Find a new dinner spot
The Haymarket is home to a range of cuisines you can try out. In the mood for a sushi date? There are multiple options including Kasumi (check out their all-you-can-eat menu), Blue Sushi Saki Grill, Shokunin and Hiro 88. If you’re overdue for a chips and queso fix, head over to El Potrero or Tipsy Tina’s and (weather permitting) grab a table on the patio. If you’re still looking for options, there are several other spots to try out in the Haymarket — from a wealth of burger spots to restaurants serving Italian and Indian fare.
Grab something sweet
A Lincoln staple, Ivanna Cone is a must-visit for locals and visitors alike. The only location in the city to use old-fashioned barrels, salt and ice layering to make ice cream, you’ll be sure to find the most tasty and interesting rotating flavors. Make sure you check out their social media to see the unique flavors of the day, from White Chocolate Espresso to more complex flavors like Honey Coffee Scooby Snack and Red Bean Oreo. Head a couple blocks north to The Rabbit Hole Bakery if you’re looking for pastries like cake by the slice and French macarons. Pro-tip: if you’re gluten-free or vegan, try their avocado brownie!

Take in the work of local artists
Aside from the murals you catch as you go through the Haymarket, the neighborhood is also home to the Burkholder Project, a gallery that’s been in Lincoln for over 30 years. If you have time to meander to the outskirts of the Haymarket, you’ll end up at Noyes Art Gallery, a co-op art space housed on 9th street. Within their different showrooms, Noyes Art Gallery features a range of paintings, sculptures, photos, pottery as well as a rotating exhibition each month.

Check out local performances
The Haymarket is home to the largest concert venue in Lincoln. Pinnacle Bank Arena has a range of famed performers visiting year-round and you’re bound to find an artist you enjoy. If you’re not a fan of large concerts, consider checking out a spot like Screamers. Owned and operated by Husker alumnus Kevin Witcher, Screamers is one of the only places in town for you to grab a meal and enjoy performances by the singing servers. Still looking for another spot to watch a performance? Head back to Crescent Moon Coffee, which prides itself on elevating local and regional performers through their concerts and open mic nights.
Shop local
The Haymarket is home to a great variety of local businesses to check out. Visit 3 Daughters Boutique or Best of Big Red if you’re looking to update your wardrobe. Head a couple blocks south and you’ll find From Nebraska Gift Shop, a family-owned shop with gourmet Nebraska food baskets, souvenirs, home goods and more. And, if you love candy, you must stop by Licorice International. Their candy supply hails from New Zealand and Australia all the way to Italy and the Netherlands. But, don’t let the name fool you if you’re not a huge licorice fan — Licorice International has all sorts of fun candies to try like specialty mints, gummy and hard candies, caramels and more.
To Do:
Face off with friends at Mana Games
Whether you’re with a large group or just hanging out with a friend, Mana Games is sure to have something for you. With over one thousand games in their library to choose from and a menu stacked with soups, sandwiches and more, Mana Games is a great place to enjoy a night of fun. And, after paying the entry fee, you’re free to play an unlimited number of games before the day is over.

Make a Candle at Wax Buffalo
Wax Buffalo’s candle lab is a fun addition to the Haymarket’s list of things to do. Open for both walk-ins and large group reservations, visitors at the candle lab have the chance to grab a beverage and cozy up to create their own scent, pick a candle vessel and pour the candle. And, don’t forget to take a peek at their supply of other products like home goods, specialty candies, apparel and other fun curated items.
Test your skills at Tomahawk Axe Throwing
A newer attraction to the Haymarket, Tomahawk Axe Throwing is located directly under the O street viaduct and is open for all ages and skill levels. While the idea of throwing axes may seem scary to some, the Tomahawks team will walk you through your first experience so you’ll be an expert in no time.
