Have a heart for giving back, but feel stuck finding the right volunteer opportunities? The good news is that as a student at Nebraska, there are many ways to get involved in service using campus resources. Here are six ways you can give back on campus and beyond.
Stay up to date with Engage Lincoln
Engage Lincoln is the perfect first step in giving back to our local community. Upcoming volunteer opportunities are consistently and conveniently shared here with sign-up links. Whether you are inspired to spend time with animals, to support clean-up and rebuilding efforts throughout the city, to work with students or to assist older communities, Engage Lincoln connects you with missions aligned with individual passions.
Join an RSO
Joining a Recognized Student Organization on campus allows students to explore interests, meet new friends and in some cases, dive into community service. While some groups have annual philanthropic events or donation drives, there are also RSOs that are centered on service and community. From Best Buddies and Campus Red Cross to The Hope Venture Club and Sustain UNL, there truly is an RSO (or two) for everyone on campus.
Already in an RSO that is looking to get connected with volunteer efforts in and around Lincoln? Connect with a staff member to learn more about opportunities available to your group.
Stop by Nonprofit in Residence
The second week of each month, students can network with local nonprofits and connect with various community partners to learn more about volunteer opportunities and maybe even score an internship down the road. For up-to-date nonprofits attending Nonprofit in Residence, head over to involved.unl.edu.
Get involved in Greek life
Whether you are an active member of a fraternity or sorority on campus or not, there are several ways to give back to the philanthropic efforts of these groups. Attending and donating to philanthropy events is not only a great way to connect with your peers but also an impactful contribution to meaningful organizations. Be sure to stay up to date on local events by following Greek organizations on social media!
Become a Volunteer Ambassador
For those looking for routine volunteer work, the university offers a Volunteer Ambassador Program where students are paired with a Lincoln nonprofit to serve throughout the semester. This program allows students to dive into their philanthropic passions while building connections and making an impact on the people of Lincoln.
Research opportunities through Handshake and LinkedIn
Platforms like LinkedIn and Handshake are great tools to connect with members of the Husker community who are making an impact through volunteer work. You never know, connecting with faculty and staff, peers and alumni may open career doors for you down the road.
