Staying engaged over the semester is crucial to your academic success. Follow these tips on staying involved with your classes to minimize any stress you might have before an exam or the end of the semester.
Don’t skip
With the increased freedom that comes with college, you’ll likely find yourself wanting to skip a class “here and there.” However, each time you skip class, you build a habit, making you prone to skip more. Your professor will recognize faces that show up to classes every day and you’ll be staying up to date on assignments, lessons and in-class points.
Write your notes
Whether you’re printing out slides and writing your notes on them during class, keeping a notebook to write in during class or revisiting your typed notes later and writing them down, it’s a researched fact that writing helps you retain more information.
Engage with your professor
Professors love building connections with students and it’s a great way to build a relationship with someone who may help you down the line as a professional. Challenge yourself to ask your professor a question or introduce yourself after class. Or try to raise your hand to answer a question in each class. Your professor will appreciate it and you’ll feel more comfortable reaching out for help if you ever need it.
Stick to a homework routine
Staying in a routine will keep you accountable and help you stay on top of your workload without letting it pile up. Set certain times aside every day for working on homework and be sure to identify areas you need help understanding so you can seek out help before exams. Aim to do the least amount of cramming possible!
Use campus resources
From the Writing Center to Study Stop and college-specific tutoring, there are several resources that can help you be successful in your classes — both general and specialized. If you just need help with your study habits, reach out to the Center for Academic Success and Transition for a session with an academic coach.
