An avid golfer since he was six years old, senior Atirath Deb Roy can see the game from every angle. As a student in Nebraska’s PGA Golf Management program and in the College of Business, Atirath has come to see golf’s potential — and his future in it — with a new perspective.
“I never realized how many avenues there are in the world of golf beyond just playing the game,” Atirath says. “Nebraska pushes you to explore and has helped me learn so much more about what’s out there.”
Since choosing Nebraska’s PGA Golf Management program — one of only sixteen accredited PGA programs — mere weeks before traveling from his New Delhi hometown to start classes, Atirath has fully embraced its many opportunities. His three internships have tapped both his golf and business education, allowing him to grow his skills across the industry.
“The first internship was working for a corporate club manufacturer, the second was teaching at a private golf course in Virgina and the third was working at a youth nonprofit in Harlem and the Bronx that combines teaching golf with academic support and life skills.”
While opening himself up to new experiences through golf, Atirath chose to open himself up on campus by becoming a resident assistant.
“Moving halfway across the world where I didn’t know anyone was scary, but my first-year RA was so helpful with everything — she even made my parents feel better during move-in. I wanted to be that person for someone else.”
Throughout this journey, Atirath has grown as a player and as a person, seeing a future in golf that allows him to continue connecting and learning through the sport.
“The program has really opened my eyes to how much I love teaching. Sharing my knowledge to help others improve is a really great feeling,” Atirath says. “From teaching to being an RA, I’ve learned I'm really adaptable and can easily connect with people, especially on the golf course. I’m just excited to keep going places, meet new people and see where it takes me.”
