As the weather warms and melts away the chill of winter, we can feel spring just around the corner! This also means it’s an important time for students is approaching: midterms. Before you let stress take over, take a deep breath and remember to relax. We’re here to share some helpful tips to help you navigate through this busy time and make it to spring break with ease!
Plan for success
The best way to get through midterms with flying colors is plan ahead. The Center for Academic Success and Transition (CAST) suggests you count back 10 days before your exam date and begin setting time aside to review course materials. This allows you to review your notes, test your comprehension of them and still have time to ask your instructor for help if there are any concepts you don’t understand.
Everyone studies differently. Whether your style is more visual or auditory, it’s important to figure out what works best for you. Tailor your studying to that. And remember, what worked for you in high school might not work for you in college, so be flexible.
Talk to your professors
Your professors want to help you be successful! Use office hours to ask questions that will help you better understand what the midterm will cover and how you can best prepare. Hint: office hours aren’t just for testing seasons. You can go in throughout the semester to get help on coursework or just chat about the course in general.
Utilize your resources
Resources extend beyond your professor. CAST is available to assist you in adapting to college life, offering support for studying, reviewing essays and brainstorming project ideas. If you need help with studying, visit this link to connect with a tutor.
The library is also a wonderful resource! If you’re looking for materials to support your midterm projects or just need a cozy spot to study, it’s the perfect place to be. Plus, you can find tutoring assistance here too! And if you have more complex assignments, there are subject matter experts ready to guide you to additional resources that can help you succeed.
Take a break & relax
It’s important to recognize when you’ve made large strides in your studies by being kind to yourself and taking a break to live your life and relax. Set aside time during your studying to take a break and do something you enjoy — whether it’s getting some fresh air, reading a book or taking a nap.
All-nighters will not yield better results; it’s essential to get enough rest and manage your time effectively. Studies indicate that short breaks can help reduce stress and improve outcomes. Just be careful to avoid a break turning into procrastination.
Seek support when you need it
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to reach out to Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). They have licensed professionals ready to support you, whether you need a listening ear or ongoing assistance.
Big Red Pawp-Up also provides students across all campuses with opportunities to relax and interact with furry companions. It occurs on the second Wednesday of each month in the Dinsdale Family Learning Commons on East Campus and the second Thursday of each month in Love Library.

Midterms can feel overwhelming, but preparation makes a difference. Just remember to create a plan, follow it, treat yourself kindly, acknowledge your achievements and ask for help when necessary. If you follow these simple steps, you’ll be on the right track for an A!
