Move-in day is just around the corner! As you pack up your things and prepare to settle into your new living space, we thought we’d ask one of our student experts about their tips and tricks for decorating residence hall rooms. Thanks to resident assistant Haille, here are a few fun and easy suggestions that will give your dorm a personal touch.
Play with different furniture arrangements
Sometimes different furniture arrangements can make all the difference in your room! Haille says a classic, convenient set up is lofting both beds and placing a TV under one bed and a futon under another. This space-saving design will give you and your roomie your own TV-watching zone and a space for your guests to relax. Play around with moving furniture pieces until you get to an arrangement that feels right for you!
Look for dual-purpose pieces
When you’re shopping for decor or furniture pieces, consider picking up items that serve multiple purposes — like an ottoman that can be used both as a space to sit and a storage spot. You can also look for cute decor like wall shelves, patterned storage bins and desk accessories. Everything will have its place when you have plenty of space!
Personalize your decor
One of Haille’s favorite ways for students to personalize their space is through tapestries. You can get a tapestry of any size, shape or color to liven up your room and bring in a touch of your personality. Haille also said that twinkle lights are popular in rooms, though she recommends consulting with your RA first to ensure you’re setting them up properly and not too close to the room’s sprinklers.
Keep it organized
Haille recommends using shelf carts, organizers and shoe trees to keep your closet and desk spaces neat and tidy. By finding more storage space for your things, you’ll be able to make your room feel tidy, organized, and bigger!
