ln town over the summer? We’ve got some ways you can spend summer right here on campus—from Outdoor Adventure rentals to scoops at the Dairy Store.
Host a Campus Picnic
Whether you want to bask in the sunshine or sit under a tree and enjoy the shade, there are lots of spots on City to East Campus for you to lay a blanket down and have a picnic or read a book. Snag some food at an event hosted by Dining Services or make your own with the help of one of these recipes from UNL Food. Check out our Spotify page for tunes while you relax.
Treat Your Sweet Tooth
Famed for its flavors like Scarlet & Cream and 4H Clover Mint, the Dairy Store is a must-visit spot during summer. Cool off in the AC or head outside to take nature from Earl G. Maxwell Arboretum or Perin Porch. If you’re not in the mood for a sweet treat, the Dairy Store also offers a range of cheeses made in-house.

Visit an East Campus Discovery Day
Hosted on three Saturdays in the summer, Discovery Days are a great way to interact with university departments and students as well as local vendors.
Take in Campus Gardens
From Maxwell Arboretum to the historic Perin Porch, there are a number of gardens to check out around East Campus. Whether you have a few minutes to spend in between summer classes or an afternoon to take in the gardens, you’re sure to have a great time and learn something new about Nebraska plants.
Take a Summer Class
While summer break should include a healthy dose of relaxation, it’s also a great time Though taking a class may not be the first thing you think to do during summer, it can be a great environment to get one or a couple out of the way during a time with fewer outside distractions like friends or extracurricular activities Courses are available both on campus and online and there are a variety of sessions available throughout the duration of summer.
Explore Museums on Campus
The University of Nebraska–Lincoln is home to the largest publicly held quilt collection in the world. But after going through the International Quilt Museum, there are other places you can explore. Check out the vibrant paintings at the Great Plains Art Museum or head to Morrill Hall to explore the vast collection highlighting Nebraska’s natural history, from fossils to examine to hands-on exhibits to dive into. Be sure to tap Archie the Mammoth’s foot on your way out for good luck!

Tour the Sheldon Sculpture Garden
More than thirty sculptures from Sheldon’s collection are displayed year-round across City and East Campuses. Print out a map of the Sheldon Sculpture Garden and carve out some time to check out each of these pieces — including major works by international artists from the early 20th century till today.
Visit Outdoor Adventures Center
Summer is a great time to explore the services available at the Outdoor Adventures Center on campus. Try your skills on the climbing wall or grab a friend to take a class if you need help for your first climb. If you have time, grab some outdoor rental equipment and head weekend camping or hiking. Rental equipment ranges from kayaks and stand-up paddleboards to tents, sleeping bags and other camping supplies. Services are open to the general public but students and campus rec members receive discounted pricing.
