This summer, Elsa Olmstead — a hospitality, restaurant and tourism management major from Parkville, Missouri — is using her experience from her studies and her work as a student manager for Husker Women's Basketball to create a seamless experience for stadium personnel and fans from all over the world.
What is your role with the Chiefs and how are you supporting the World Cup this summer?
As an Event Services Staffing Assistant with the Kansas City Chiefs, I help support the successful operation of FIFA World Cup matches at Kansas City Stadium by ensuring event staff are prepared and equipped before each match. My responsibilities include organizing and distributing staff materials, preparing work areas, placing supplies and equipment in their designated locations, and assisting with behind-the-scenes logistics that keep event operations running efficiently. By supporting event readiness and coordinating essential staffing resources, I help create a seamless experience for both stadium personnel and the thousands of fans attending one of the world’s largest sporting events.
What has been your favorite part of your internship this summer?
My favorite part of this internship has been experiencing the incredible atmosphere that the FIFA World Cup brings to Kansas City. Watching fans from all over the world passionately support their countries and create an electric environment at every match has been unforgettable. It’s been an amazing opportunity to see some of the world’s top soccer players compete live while also working behind the scenes to help make each event successful. Equally rewarding has been working alongside such an incredible team of coworkers who have made every shift enjoyable. Their positivity, teamwork, and dedication have made this internship not only a valuable professional experience but also one that I will always remember.
Is there anything you’ve taken from your major or other internships that has been valuable in this role?
Absolutely. As a Hospitality and Event Management major, I’ve learned how much planning, organization, and teamwork go into creating successful events. Those skills have directly applied to my role with the Kansas City Chiefs, where preparation behind the scenes is essential to ensuring each FIFA World Cup match runs smoothly. My coursework has helped me understand the importance of guest experience, communication, and attention to detail, all of which I’ve been able to put into practice.
Working as a student manager for the women’s basketball team has also been incredibly valuable. That role has taught me how to work in a fast-paced environment, adapt to unexpected situations, communicate effectively with coaches and athletes, and stay organized under pressure. Combining what I’ve learned in the classroom with my experiences in athletics has prepared me to contribute confidently in a professional sports environment, and this internship has reinforced that I’m pursuing the right career path.
