The university is committed to creating a culture of safety on our campuses for our Husker community to live, learn, work and enjoy. Here are several resources — from mental health to severe weather — to leverage while you’re on campus.
UNL Alert
UNL Alert is a mass notification system that sends email notifications with emergency information to help you make decisions. Should there be weather, traffic or other safety concerns on campus, UNL Alert is designed to provide credible information for students to make informed decisions. You’re also strongly encouraged to sign up for text message notifications here.
Husker Safe Walk
Through the university’s Husker Safe Walk, all members of the university community can request a walking escort to any on-campus location at any time — day or night. Just call (402)-472–2222 to request an attendant.
CARE
The Center for Advocacy, Response and Education is a free, confidential, supportive resource for students, faculty and staff impacted by interpersonal violence such as sexual violence, stalking or harassment or domestic violence. CARE advocates are available to provide education, advocacy and support for students.
Mental Health Resources
REACH Suicide Prevention Training is designed to help the campus community recognize warning signs, engage with empathy and help others access care and treatment. The university provides REACH Training for students, faculty and staff interested in acquiring certification. Additionally, most counseling services provided by CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services) are completely covered by student fees. This includes individual counseling, support groups, therapy groups, etc.
Safe Exchange Zones
When you’re making purchases online from places like Facebook Marketplace, for example, the spot you choose for the exchange can make all the difference in terms of safety. UNLPD has new Safe Exchange Zones that are well-lit, equipped with security cameras and available 24 hours a day when you’re meeting with someone you don’t know. Safe Exchange Zones are housed at UNLPD headquarters on City Campus or Hardin Hall at East Campus.
Good Samaritan Law
The Good Samaritan Law was implemented to encourage you to call for help if you or a friend needs medical attention while consuming alcohol underage. Both the person in need and the caller are protected by the law under three criteria. Learn more here.
Theft Prevention + Lost and Found
If your items have serial numbers or unique markings, they can be entered into a local and nationwide computer system to identify stolen property. In the case of theft, registering your electronics, bikes vehicles and other important equipment with university police increases the chances of recovering your item. UNLPD also houses a lost and found for valuables on campus. If you’re missing a personal item, you can check their Crowdfind database at any time to see if it has been found — or file a claim if it is not listed.
Find more safety resources
From bike and pedestrian safety to parking and additional health services, there are several additional resources across the university. These range from various policies and procedures to guides and workshops available to help keep the campus community and visitors safe during their time on campus.
