Students working in the ceramics area are introduced to a range of possibilities in terms of forming and firing technologies. Working at beginning, intermediate and advanced levels they come in contact with the three faculty members as well as graduate students pursuing their MFA degrees. Aesthetics, philosophy and history are a routine part of instruction, providing students with a strong structure in understanding this field. Students learn the basics of handbuilding and throwing, both pottery and sculpture. During the program, they become members of firing teams and learn how to load and fire the entire range of kilns including salt, soda, straight reduction, wood and electric. Students also have opportunities to take a kiln building classes and classes on glaze and clay body chemistry. Working in the ceramics area at UNL is a highly rewarding educational and developmental experience.
