How To Enroll

Interested in ROTC? Register for our Academic Classes in MyRed with no obligation. 

Students can enroll in academic classes with a military science instructor that covers topics such as leadership skills, basic soldiering skills, and military customs and courtesies. Military science labs are also held once a week to help current and prospective ROTC students expand their tactical knowledge and practical leadership skills. Enrolling in these classes can be an excellent way to learn more about the ROTC program and determine if it is a good fit for you. 

First Year Students

- Fall Semester: Enroll in MLSC 101 and MLSC 101L

- Spring Semester: Enroll in MLSC 102 and MLSC 102L

Second Year Students

- Fall Semester: Enroll in MLSC 201 and MLSC 201L

- Spring Semester: Enroll in MLSC 202 and MLSC 202L

Third Year Students

- Fall Semester: Enroll in MLSC 301 and MLSC 301L

- Spring Semester: Enroll in MLSC 302 and MLSC 302L

Fourth Year Students

- Fall Semester: Enroll in MLSC 401 and MLSC 401L

- Spring Semester: Enroll in MLSC 402 and MLSC 402L

Further information about academic classes can be found in the UNL course catalog or here. Army ROTC academic classes are open to all students and can be taken even if students are not contracted into ROTC. They can be taken with no obligation.

High School Students

If you are a high-school Senior interested in participating in Army ROTC while in college, you can apply for the Army ROTC four-year scholarship! You may apply for a scholarship by clicking here. All scholarship applications must be completed by High School Seniors before January 10th of their senior year to be considered for the 4-year scholarship.

College Students

If you are interested in joining Army ROTC and are already in college, you still have options. 

Incoming Second Year Students 

Incoming second-year students are eligible for the ROTC compression program, which allows them to complete the ROTC program in three years. The timeline for the ROTC compression program is the following: 

Second Academic Year

- Fall Semester: Enroll in MSCL 101, MLSC 201, and MLSC 201L

- Spring Semester: Enroll in MLSC 102, MLSC 202, and MLSC 202L

After completing one year of the ROTC compression program, students will be on track to graduate in four years. 

Incoming Third Year Students 

Students who join Army ROTC at the beginning of their third year of college must have completed Army Basic Training or Army Basic Camp. 

What is Basic Camp?

Basic Camp, or Cadet Initial Entry Training (CIET), is a 32-day paid leadership course in Fort Knox, KY. Basic Camp allows prospective cadets to learn about Army customs and courtesies, soldiering skills, and further develop their leadership abilities. Students attend Army ROTC Basic Camp the summer before their third year of college. Potential Cadets can attend Basic Camp with no obligation to remain in the ROTC program following Basic Camp graduation. 

Upon completing Basic Camp, students continuing in ROTC will be on track to graduate in two years.

Grad Students

If you are interested in joining Army ROTC as a graduate student, you may be eligible to attend Cadet Initial Entry Training and participate in the Advanced Course during your final two years as a graduate student. Guard/Reserve Soldiers

Soldiers currently in the National Guard or U.S. Army Reserve can participate in the Army ROTC through the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP). Cadets in the SMP serve as Reserve or National Guard Officer trainees while completing college. SMP Cadets can earn their Reserve/Guard pay and benefits in addition to Army ROTC allowances. Some of the many benefits of being an SMP Cadet are outlined below. 

GFRD Scholarships

Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty (GFRD) scholarships are available through the ARNG and USAR for students who desire to participate in the Senior ROTC program. These scholarships guarantee that the student once graduated from school and commissioned in the U.S. Army, must serve their obligation in the ARNG or Reserves. ARNG/USAR scholarships are available in the following lengths: 2, 2.5, and 3-years. To be eligible for the scholarships, the student must have exactly that amount of school remaining. For example, to qualify for the two-year scholarship, the student must have exactly two years of school remaining; to be eligible for the 2.5-year scholarship, the student must have exactly 2.5 years of school remaining. Students can elect these scholarships to pay for 100% tuition and fees OR room & board, not to exceed $10,000 per year. In addition, a $1200 per year book allowance is paid to the student. SMP Cadets are also eligible to receive monthly stipends in the following amounts: $350 for the sophomore year, $450 for the junior year, and $500 for the senior year. The ARNG/USAR scholarship student must participate in the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) with an ARNG/USAR unit while in school. While in the program, the student drills with an ARNG unit and is paid at the rank of E-5, approximately $290 per month, unless the student is already in the ARNG and holds a rank higher than E-5.

Federal Tuition Assistance

  • Available for Non-Scholarship Cadets (including MSIs and MSIIs) who are drilling Reservists or Guardsmen and have been to Basic and AIT and have served at least one year as a drilling Guardsman/Reservist.

Husker Salute Scholarship

- Offers in-state tuition to out-of-state students participating in ROTC at UNL

- Must enroll in a minimum of 12 credits per semester

- Must maintain a minimum of a 2.0 GPA 

- Must maintain enrollment in a UNL ROTC program

- Able to cover summer semester classes
