Summer Funding Directions

Summer School 2023 Funding Information

As a Thompson Scholar, you are eligible for funds from the Susan T. Buffett Scholarship for the summer session(s) if you wish to enroll. While the Buffett Scholarship program requires you to be enrolled for at least nine credit hours during the fall and spring terms, there is not a required number of credit hours for the summer session(s). Summer term is unique in that William H. Thompson Scholars must request to receive scholarship funds if you plan to take summer courses.

Please read this information carefully so that you can ensure accuracy and compliance. The maximum amount of the Buffett Scholarship is determined based on the number of hours for which you enroll.

Your maximum scholarship eligibility at UNL is as follows:

1 or 2 hours=$693.75
3-5 hours = $1,387.50
6-8 hours = $2,775.00
9-11 hours=$4,162.50
12+ hours = $5,550.00

If you are interested in taking summer courses, I have listed the steps that you must take to apply the Buffett Scholarship to your student bill. Students may use their Buffett Scholarship in a variety of ways during the summer terms, so utilize the instructions below based on your individual academic plans. As always, please consult with your WHT Program Coordinator and academic advisor before making decisions related to summer school enrollment.

FAQS

  1. What happens if a student has to drop a course in the summer?
Students must manually go into their MyRed to drop a course. Students must also drop the course through their Summer Aid Application via MyRed. Please note: Students must pay back funding (i.e., scholarships and financial aid) they received for dropped classes.
  2. When does a student need to complete the Request for Funding from a Secondary College Form (using this link)?
    https://app.buffettscholarships.org/request/fundsecondarycollege
This must be completed 2 weeks prior to the summer session at the institution where you are enrolled. Please check the registration dates at the institution where you plan to enroll in courses Please Note: This form is only needed for students who wish to enroll in classes at another college. Do NOT complete the Secondary College Request form if you are planning to only attend UNL for the summer session(s). If you are planning to only take classes at UNL in the summer, you only need to complete the Summer Aid Application in MyRED.
  3. Should a student receive a confirmation from the Buffett Foundation for any forms they submit?
Yes. Students will receive a confirmation for any request form submitted to the Buffett Foundation (e.g., Secondary College Request, Transfer Request, Study Abroad Request). Do not assume your request is approved until you receive a confirmation. Please Note: Students completing the Summer Aid Application will NOT receive a confirmation from the Buffett Foundation.
  4. If a student takes a class at an institution other than UNL, do the credits, as well as the GPA transfer back?
No. While the credits do transfer back, the GPA may not automatically transfer. Please check the policies at other institutions to determine how credits and GPA transfer back to UNL.
  5. Does a class a student takes at a secondary institution always count towards his/her major?
This is determined on a case by case basis by the department. The student must discuss the class they plan to take with their academic advisor to ensure that the class will count toward their major.

Summer Enrollment Instructions

Please be aware of the following IMPORTANT summer aid scholarship information:

  • The Buffett Foundation gives the summer term the same weight as fall and spring terms. Students need to maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 each term. Thus, no matter how many credit hours students are enrolled in for the summer term, if the cumulative GPA drops below a 2.0, the student will be on scholarship probation. Two consecutive or three total terms on probation will result in loss of scholarship.
  • There are specific forms that you may need to fill out at each institution, so please pay close attention to the directions under each section to ensure you complete each step.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of withdrawal policies for the summer term, which differ from the regular academic year calendar due to the scheduling of summer classes in sessions.
  • Financial aid funds for the entire summer are disbursed in the first session for which students are registered. For example, if a student registers for a 3-hour course for the First 5-weeks session and another 3-hour course for the Second 5-week session, they will receive funds for the full 6 credits at the beginning of the First 5-week session.
  • Students must pay back any tuition or fees for courses they drop in the summer. Charges for dropped summer classes will be placed on their student account.
  • Students are strongly encouraged to save their financial aid until they are sure of their entire summer class schedule and are confident they will not drop any classes in any of the summer sessions for which they are enrolled.

Instructions for Summer Course Funding at UNL:

If you intend to take courses at UNL be aware there are 4 different summer sessions to choose from.

  • Pre-Session: May 30th-June 16th
  • 8-Week Session: June 19th-August 10th
  • 1st 5-Week Session: May 30th-June 30th
  • 2nd 5-Week Session: July 10th-August 10th
  1. Register for your summer classes in MyRED.
  2. Complete the Summer Aid Application in MyRED. Once you have completed registration for the summer sessions, complete the Summer Aid Application, if the registrations match, the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid will award/adjust your Buffett Scholarship accordingly on the basis of your summer session(s) enrollment at UNL. In the event that you change your enrollment after you complete the Summer Aid Application, you will need to update the Summer Aid Application.

For example, if you initially noted on your Summer Aid Application that you were going to enroll for six credit hours at UNL, but you changed your plans and you update your enrollment to reflect only three credit hours at UNL, you will need to update your Summer Aid Application in MyRED to reflect three credit hours.

There are 4 steps to follow:

Step 1. Log into MyRed.

Step 2. Once you are on the UNL MyRED Portal page, you will see a Financial Aid tab.

Step 3. Click or place cursor on the Financial Aid tab and scroll to the “Summer Aid Application”.

Step 4. Review the first portion of your application explaining various financial aid that you may be offered and click on the button labeled “continue”.

Step 5. Answer all the questions listed to submit your Summer Aid Application. Be sure to update the application by the deadlines listed if your plans change.

Step 6. Once you have completed all steps you will receive a confirmation message and the Buffett Foundation will be notified that you are taking summer courses at UNL.

Please note:

  • If you are ONLY planning to take a class/classes at UNL there is nothing further you need to do.
  • If you intend to take classes at UNL (under 12 hours) and another institution during the summer term, you must fill out the Request for Funding from a Secondary College Form (using this link) https://app.buffettscholarships.org/request/fundsecondarycollege to receive Buffett scholarship funding at the other institution, in addition to following the instructions for Summer courses at UNL listed above.
  • If you plan to register at UNL full-time (12+ hours) and a secondary institution during the summer term, you do not need to complete the Request for Funding from a Secondary College Form, as you would not be eligible for any further scholarship funding; just complete the instructions for courses at UNL.
