Grace Bauer, reading from “Unholy Heart: New and Selected Poems”
Date: Oct. 5, 2022
Time: 5:00 pm
Location: Andrews Hall, Bailey Library (Room 229)
Poet Grace Bauer taught poetry in the UNL Creative Writing Program for 26 years, and she was one of the most influential mentors in the English Department. We will celebrate Grace on Oct 5, and she will read from her most recent book: “Unholy Heart: New and Selected Poems.”
“Unholy Heart” includes generous selections from each of Grace’s previous books of poetry, plus a sampling of new poems. Grace has long been known for the wide range of both her subject matter and poetic styles, from the biblical persona poems of “The Women at the Well,” to the explorations of visual art in “Beholding Eye,” to the intersections of personal history and pop culture in “Retreats and Recognitions” and “Nowhere All At Once,” and to the postmodern fragmentations in “MEAN/TIME.” Along with these selections, Grace incorporates her most elegiac work yet.
Poetry Reading: Dipika Mukherjee
Date: Oct. 6, 2022
Time: 5:30 pm
Location: Andrews Hall, Bailey Library (Room 229)
With wonder, empathy, and even rage, DIALECT OF DISTANT HARBORS summons a shared humanity to examine issues of illness and family. As the world recovers from a global pandemic and the failure of modern government, these poems are incantations to our connections to the human family—whether in Asia, Europe, or the United States.
“Mukherjee’s latest poetry collection is a penetrating, intercontinental, and reflective sheaf of poems on aging, illness, faith, and family written in a keen diasporic music. Mukherjee is skilled in various poetic forms. Her vision is clear and her sensory awareness of the stuff of human experience is stunning. As she says, ‘sometimes the third eye is a camera, / sometimes a fist to the heart.’”—Maya Marshall
Dipika Mukherjee is the author of two novels, SHAMBALA JUNCTION and ODE TO BROKEN THINGS, and a short story collection, RULES OF DESIRE. She has published two books of poetry, THE PALIMPSEST OF EXILE and THE THIRD GLASS OF WINE. She teaches at the Graham School at the University of Chicago, as well as StoryStudio Chicago.
The event is sponsored by UNL’s Institute for Ethnic Studies and the Creative Writing Program of the Department of English.

Candice Millard’s talk will touch on her four New York Times best sellers: “The River of Doubt,” “Destiny of the Republic,” “Hero of the Empire,” and “River of the Gods.” Her first book, “The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt’s Darkest Journey,” was also a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection and a Book Sense Pick. It won the William Rockhill Nelson Award and was a finalist for the Quill Awards.
Her second book about President James Garfield, “Destiny of the Republic: A Tail of Madness, Medicine and Murder of a President,” won the Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime, the One Book One Lincoln Award, and the Kansas Notable Book Award. Millard’s “Hero of the Empire: The Boer War, a Daring Escape and the Making of Winston Churchill,” was named Amazon’s number one history book of 2016.
Her most recent book, “River of the Gods: Genius, Courage, and Betrayal in the Search for the Source of the Nile” is already a top ten New York Times best seller. Focused on English explorers Richard Burton and John Hanning Speke, Millard tells a story of courage and adventure, set against the backdrop of the race to exploit Africa by the colonial powers. This book also profiles Sidi Mubarak Bombay, their formerly enslaved local guide. Without Bombay and men like him, who led, carried, and protected the expedition, neither Englishman would have come close to the headwaters of the Nile, or perhaps even survived.
Her essays have also appeared in the New York Times Book Review, Washington Post Book World, the Guardian, National Geographic and TIME.
