Day With(out) Art 2023

Date: Dec. 1, 2023

Time: 10:00 am–7:00 pm

Location: Sheldon Museum of Art Room: Ethel S. Abbott Auditorium

Sheldon Museum of Art is proud to partner with Visual AIDS (www.visualaids.org) for Day With(out) Art 2023 by presenting “Everyone I Know Is Sick,” a program of five videos generating connections between HIV and other forms of illness and disability.

The program features newly commissioned work by Dorothy Cheung (Hong Kong), Hiura Fernandes & Lili Nascimento (Brazil), Beau Gomez (Canada/Philippines), Dolissa Medina & Ananias P. Soria (USA), and Kurt Weston (USA).

Inspired by a statement from Cyrée Jarelle Johnson in the book “Black Futures,” “Everyone I Know Is Sick” examines how our society excludes disabled and sick people by upholding a false dichotomy of health and sickness. Inviting us to understand disability as a common experience rather than an exception to the norm, the program highlights a range of experiences spanning HIV, COVID, mental health, and aging. The commissioned artists foreground the knowledge and expertise of disabled and sick people in a world still grappling with multiple ongoing pandemics.

Sheldon will show a looping presentation of the video program from 10 AM to 7 PM. Admission is free.

Visual AIDS is a New York-based non-profit that utilizes art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue, supporting HIV+ artists, and preserving a legacy, because AIDS is not over.

“Threads & Trails: Contemplations of Our Herstories”
Lower-level gallery
October 6, 2023–February 17, 2024
“Threads & Trails” is a collaborative exhibition created by five female-identifying artists who connect their personal histories to the conquest of the American West and Indigenous dispossession. Featuring the work of Erica Larsen-Dockray, Cybele Moon, Steph Coley, Eve-Lauryn LaFountain, and Marissa Magdalena Sykes, this installation explores the experiences of women from the past and present in a space that is immersive, enlightening, inclusive, and transformative.

Support for this exhibition and related programming was generously provided by: Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation, Humanities Nebraska and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, Richard P. Kimmel & Laurine Kimmel Charitable Foundation, Lincoln Community Foundation, Union Bank & Trust, UNL Research Council, UNL Faculty Senate Convocations Committee

“Supporting Indigenous Sisters: An International Print Exchange”
July 25–December 16, 2023
“Supporting Indigenous Sisters” is a print portfolio exchange involving sixteen artists from both Indigenous and non-Indigenous backgrounds. The portfolio was created to help begin conversations on many levels about missing and murdered Indigenous women. Each artist was asked to reach into their own experiences as a female walking this earth. The images from all of the artists advocate for change and for voicing this dark present history. Artists were invited by Melanie Yazzie, head of printmaking at the University of Colorado Boulder, and Catherine Prose, professor of printmaking at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.

“From Paintbrushes to Camera Lenses: Creative Women of the Great Plains, Part II”
July 25–December 16, 2023
In fall 2018, the Great Plains Art Museum mounted “From Paintbrushes to Camera Lenses: Creative Women of the Great Plains,” an exhibition that highlighted exceptional work created by female artists from the museum’s permanent collection. To complement other female-focused exhibitions on view during fall 2023, the museum is organizing part two of this exhibition to showcase many recent acquisitions and other works from the collection by women that were not shown in the first installation.

Admission is always free.

“Roots So Deep” Film Screening

Date: Dec. 5, 2023

Time: 6:00 pm–9:00 pm

Location: Hardin Hall Room: 107 South (Auditorium)

“Roots So Deep (you can see the devil down there)” is a 4-part documentary series all about inventive farmers and maverick scientists building a path to solving climate change with hooves, heart and soil.

Can an underutilized way to graze cattle, that mimics the way bison once roamed the land, help get farmers out of debt, restore our depleted soils, rebuild wildlife habitat and draw down huge amounts of carbon? Cattle have been seen as eco-villains for a long time. What if they can help save us from catastrophic climate change?

“Roots So Deep” is guided by director and wrangler of scientists Peter Byck as he meets farmers on both sides of the fence – the folks practicing an adaptive way to graze, and their neighbors set in their family’s generations-old method of doing things. Byck’s team of outcast scientists are measuring what’s happening on both sides of the fences – exploring if this adaptive grazing could help slow down climate change.

And one question looms over the whole series: even if the science shows that the adaptive way to graze is better for the land and the farmers’ pocket books, will the old school farmers change, will they adopt a different method? Will they evolve into climate heroes? Will they save our friggin’ *$&@# from the impending climate catastrophe?

The screening will start at 6:30 pm and the panel discussion will follow the screening at 8:30 pm

The screen is sponsored by the UNL Soil Judging Team as part of the World Soil Day.
