Inclusive Teaching Through Writing

Date: Feb. 13, 2024

Time: 12:00 pm–1:00 pm

Location: Linguistic Justice and You

In the classroom, instructors work with students from diverse backgrounds whose writing may diverge to a greater or lesser degree from what they tend to expect. Rather than considering this divergence a barrier to student success, this workshop invites participants to consider the benefits of fostering linguistic diversity. This workshop will introduce the framework of linguistic justice and challenge the idea of “Standard American English.” Participants will reflect on their own experiences of learning to write both within and outside academic contexts, and they will explore how they might begin applying principles of linguistic justice toward a more inclusive classroom. Participants will leave with a plan for at least one concrete change they will make to their teaching practices or assignment design with linguistic justice in mind.

Adventure and Authenticity

Date: Feb. 23, 2024

Time: 6:00 pm–8:00 pm

Location: Nebraska Union Room: Swanson Auditorium

*FREE EVENT*

Jedidiah Jenkins is committed to the natural world and passionately encourages enthusiasm in audiences for the vast possibilities that exploration and adventure hold. Jenkins will be sharing his story of journeys through nature, inspiring them to not only appreciate their surroundings more but also to believe that a life defined by a sense of wonder and fulfillment is possible if one is willing to take a risk.

Finding himself dissatisfied with his day-to-day life and eager to make a stronger connection with the natural world, Jenkins upended his life in the pursuit of adventure and personal fulfillment. He biked from Oregon to Patagonia and not only explored the earth’s wonders, which he shared on Instagram with an eager base of followers but also learned about himself.

This experience is the subject of Jenkins’s first book, the memoir To Shake The Sleeping Self: A 10,000-mile Journey from Oregon to Patagonia, and One Man’s Quest to Wake Up the Soul, which offers an illuminating look at the impact travel can have on a person’s life and a meditation on meaningful questions about purpose, authenticity, and meaning.

His second book, Like Streams to the Ocean: Notes on Ego, Love, and the Things That Make Us Who We Are is a collection of essays in which Jenkins explores the eight subjects that give life meaning: ego, family, home, friendship, love, work, death, the soul. He leads readers in a wide-ranging conversation about finding fulfillment in the people and places around us and discovering the courage to show our deepest selves to the world.

In his latest memoir, Mother, Nature, Jenkins sets off on a 5,000-mile journey with his wildly entertaining mother to discover whether they can bridge a common yet seemingly impossible divide between them and find a way to love each other and their differences.

The Beyond Adventure speaker series is sponsored by the Outdoor Adventures program through the financial gift of Joel and Patti Meier. Every speaker in this series comes to UNL to share their story about finding the outdoors and how it has challenged and transformed their life. Historically, the pursuit of the outdoors has been hard to access for many. The stories told here share that struggle and provide empowerment to seek the outdoors.
