Great Plains talk: “An Indian Reserve, a White Town, and the Road to Reconciliation”

Date: Nov. 17, 2023

Time: 4:00 pm–5:00 pm

Location: Center for Great Plains Studies

Legal experts Andrew Stobo Sniderman and Douglas Sanderson (Amo Binashii) will speak at the Center for Great Plains Studies on Nov. 17 at 4 p.m. about racism and reconciliation on Canada’s Great Plains.

The co-authors of “Valley of the Birdtail: An Indian Reserve, a White Town, and the Road to Reconciliation” will discuss how two neighboring communities on either side of the Birdtail River in Manitoba became separate and unequal over the 150 years of their history. This story of an Indigenous reserve and a nearby settler town reflects much of what has gone wrong in relations between Indigenous Peoples and non-Indigenous Canadians. It also offers, in the end, a measure of hope for future reconciliation both in Canada and the United States. Join the authors for a Q&A-style discussion at the Center for Great Plains Studies.

Sniderman is a writer, lawyer, and Rhodes Scholar from Montreal who has written for the New York Times, the Globe and Mail, and Maclean’s. He has also argued before the Supreme Court of Canada, served as the human rights policy advisor to the Canadian minister of foreign affairs, and worked for a judge of South Africa’s Constitutional Court. Sanderson is the Prichard Wilson Chair in Law and Public Policy at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and has served as a senior policy advisor to Ontario’s attorney general and minister of Indigenous affairs. He is Swampy Cree, Beaver clan, of the Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

Sniderman and Sanderson’s “Valley of the Birdtail” (Harper Collins, 2022), is the winner of the 2023 Stubbendieck Great Plains Distinguished Book Prize. During the lecture, guests can enter a raffle to win one of five copies of the book. The Stubbendieck Book Prize celebrates the most outstanding work about the Great Plains during the past year, chosen by an independent group of scholars. At the event, both authors will receive a prize medallion and the $10,000 award. The award is supported annually by former Center Director Jim Stubbendieck and his wife Cheryl.

This Paul A. Olson lecture is free and open to all. Books will be available for purchase at the event.

Seasons of Change, An Art Exhibition

Date: Nov. 20, 2023

Time: 8:00 am–8:00 pm

Location: Nebraska Innovation Campus, 2nd Floor Link

The “Seasons of Change” art exhibition by Emily Frenzen features photographed landscapes and scenes from Nebraska, Montana, Arizona, and Colorado in every season. This collection also showcases paintings inspired by the colors of winter, spring, summer, and fall. There is much to be learned from every changing season when we pause to experience them with all of our senses—seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, and feeling. What do we see in the clear reflection of Colorado water? How do the grand landscapes of a Montana winter speak to us? What do we experience when we go through change ourselves? This exhibition ultimately begs the question: How do the seasons speak to us about the stories of our lives?

Emily Frenzen is a small-town Nebraska native with a love for art, color, words, and people. To learn more about Emily and her photography business, please visit: https://stellaimaging.mypixieset.com/.

This exhibit is free and open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

The Dial — An AR Experience

Date: –

Time: 6:00 pm–8:00 pm

Location: Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts

THE DIAL is an interactive narrative that combines Augmented Reality and Projection Mapping. The mysterious story of a formerly wealthy American family begins with a tragic late-night car crash. A middle-aged woman smashes through the stonewall in front of her family home. Told from shifting perspectives, including two young girls snooping from next door, the elderly mother, the police, and the omniscient house that sits at its center, the rich visual tale reveals the family’s emotional underbelly and unravels what happened that fateful night.

This installation is FREE and open to the public, but tickets are required.

Please note, the story occasionally contains strong language, which may be unsuitable for children.

Additional Public Info:
Shows run every 20 minutes. Please visit the ticket website for more info: nebraskarep.org/the-dial
