Mahtem Shiferraw

Visiting poet Mahtem Shiferraw reads from her work.

Mahtem Shiferraw is a writer and visual artist from Ethiopia and Eritrea. She is the author of three full-length poetry collections; FUCHSIA (University of Nebraska Press, 2016) which won the Sillerman First Book Prize for African Poets; YOUR BODY IS WAR (University of Nebraska Press, 2019) and NOMENCLATURES OF INVISIBILITY (BOA Editions Ltd., 2023). She is also the author of the chapbook collection BEHIND WALLS & GLASS (Finishing Line Press, 2015). She has served as an editor, curator or advisor for different literary journals including Atlas and Alice, The Bleeding Lion, The Hunger Mountain, and more. She is the founder and executive director of ANAPHORA ARTS, a nonprofit organization that advocates for writers and artists of color. She has served as a jury member for different literary prizes and artist residencies, including the Neudstat International Prize for Literature, the Brunel International African Poetry Prize, the Lucy Munro Brooker Prize, and more. As of 2020, she also serves on the Editorial Board of World Literature Today, where she curated the Black Voices Series (2020, 2021) and the New African Voices portfolio.

Fall Colors Hike

University of Nebraska Press

The University of Nebraska Press offers unpaid internship opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students at UNL and UNO. These internships offer students experience in the world of book publishing and foster a familiarity with the acquisitions process, wherein editors select, review, contract, and prepare manuscripts for publication. We primarily publish nonfiction books along with a few works of contemporary and regional prose. Deadline to apply is November 15.

Laurus is UNL’s undergraduate lit magazine, and they’re looking for editors for their next issue! To apply, you’ll need to submit a a) cover letter detailing your interest, past experience with editing or other literary matters, understanding of the time commitment, and how you heard of this opportunity; b) a brief resume or relevant experiences or coursework; and c) a paragraph-length review of “Gaia,” a poem from the 2023 Laurus issue (feel free to choose a different piece from a Laurus issue if you have access). Apply for the Santa Barbara Film Festival Film Studies Program!

Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) Film Studies Program is a three-day symposium open to all undergraduate students from around the United States. The program emphasizes film appreciation, criticism, and analysis. Led by SBIFF educators, participating students experience a packed program with access to SBIFF’s many events and opportunities, including:

  • The opportunity to view some of the 250+ films with priority access.
  •  Attend the highly acclaimed Panel Series, where notable industry professionals come together for discussions spanning directing, producing, writing and women in the business.
  • Hear guest filmmakers participate in intimate Q&A sessions.
  • Partake in private sessions with filmmakers and national media professionals in a classroom environment.
  • Experience the red carpet at one of SBIFF’s Tribute Events – an hour and a half of raw conversation about the honoree’s career.

The Film Studies program offers a unique mix of guided and self-guided opportunities, allowing students to maximize their experience at the festival, while still pursuing their individual interests. All accepted students outside of Santa Barbara receive complimentary priority film festival access and overnight accommodations during their stay in addition to a $500 travel stipend. Film Internship Opportunity - Renovo Media Group

Renovo Media Group (RMG) is an independent film/TV studio formed in 2020. Renovo is based in Clear Lake, Iowa and operates out of a 225,000 square foot facility that houses soundstages, a state-of-the-art LED volume sound stage, a recording studio, equipment rental house, editing suites, production office space and a wellness center. Renovo's most recent film WILDCAT starring Maya Hawke, Laura Linney, Liam Neeson and directed by Ethan Hawke premiered at Telluride and Toronto International Film Festival to positive acclaim.

As legislative attacks on queer and transgender people only become more common, it is crucial that LGBTQ+ stories are told in states like our own. Join us as we celebrate the power of film as an agent for social change, celebration and empowerment. The Foundationalist is the literary journal at the University of Iowa, and they aim to publish quality work from undergraduates across the country. The Foundationalist accepts undergraduate literary essays, poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction. We would also be happy to accept anything that had been written for class. There are no page limits or themes. We simply want students to submit their best work! In the past, we have published works from across the globe, giving writers the opportunity to join a community of over 125+ other authors from 70+ universities.
